Design for Everyday: A Guide to Copenhagen’s “Essentials” Collection

Copenhagen’s design philosophy is rooted in great design and quality craftmanship and never has this belief been more evident than in our Essentials Collection, which evolved from our successful 2020 Anniversary Collection. Emily Hansen, Copenhagen's marketing manager, explains “One of Copenhagen's founders and owners, Erik Hansen, along with owner Jens Hansen, envisioned a curated collection showcasing the best of Copenhagen – high-quality, timeless design at responsible prices. They worked closely with manufacturers to create an exclusive, hand-curated selection at the most competitive prices possible. The positive customer response led to the continuation of this collection, now known as Essentials.”

This legacy of quality and value continues to shape the Essentials Collection today, offering a dynamic selection of stylish and accessible contemporary furnishings. Explore our guide below to discover what makes the Essentials Collection stand out – you may just find your next essential item within!

A Foundation for Modern Living

“The Essentials Collection is curated with the intention that, if someone wants to bring a Scandinavian contemporary or modern piece to their home, this collection is a great place to begin, especially in terms of value and style,” Hansen explains. “Furniture that is added to Essentials can fit in seamlessly with other design styles in your home, whether that be mid-century modern, transitional, or even antiques.”

Indeed, having an accessible starting point for furnishing a new home or dipping one’s toes into the world of modern design can offer a smoother shopping experience and a wealth of inspiration. Contemporary and modern design continue to rise in popularity, as more people seek sleek, minimalist furnishings that are as functional as they are stylish. Spanning the major furniture categories, the Essentials Collection offers just that – take the Tetris Coffee Table or Bella Luna Bed for example. With two lift tops and a ceramic marble accent, Tetris is attractive and versatile, as is Bella Luna, which features clean lines, matte black eco-veneer, and LED accent lighting. These Essentials products showcase the collection’s perfect balance of curation and variety.

A Symphony of Style & Quality

Despite its strategic pricing, the Essentials Collection doesn’t skimp on quality; each product offered is meticulously chosen for a variety of reasons. Hansen stresses that “Essentials items must be high quality and offer excellent value. This collection is dynamic in that new designs are always being introduced, whether it’s an exciting color or a completely new line.” As a result, you’ll find both timeless and trendy pieces in the collection, and can expect each one to embody clean style, superior quality, and optimal functionality.

Copenhagen has Essential items for the living room, bedroom, office, and dining room, and Hansen explains that “our buyers diversify the collection by ensuring that there is a wide variety of functions and styles represented.” For example, the living room features options like the Brendan Sectional, which boasts power motion seats, USB ports, and family-friendly protected leather, as well as modular systems like Beacon that allow for customized seating arrangements. In the dining room, the extendable Tito Dining Table can effortlessly accommodate gatherings of any size with two self-storing leaves that simply slide out and up.

Hansen also points out that due to the variety of finishes and textures one can find in the Essentials collection, these products “mix-and-match beautifully with any other item that Copenhagen sells.” The Italian-made Bella Giorno Dining Table is bold in design yet understated in color, resulting in a piece that can either complement or stand out in your dining space, while the Emma Dining Chair comes in two color variations and features a tailored design that adds structure. Essentials also offers designs with distinctive styles that can change the look and feel of a space without overwhelming it. The Cullin Sofa has a unique, textured slubbed fabric and comfortably plush seats that instantly create an inviting atmosphere.

A Collection in Motion

“The Essentials Collection gives people a great place to start their shopping and represents the furniture Copenhagen carries, to then explore our range of products,” Hansen states, highlighting the collection’s popularity with customers over the years. The Bravo collection, for example, is a great minimalist option for those furnishing their first bedroom, with various sized bed frames and storage solutions available in two neutral tones.

Even so, well-versed shoppers can benefit from Essentials just as much as new buyers; its ever-evolving nature offers the potential of products with special finishes, limited quantities, or just something unique. The blue-green hue and winged backrest of the Lila Dining Chair give it a decorative look that manages to feel both elegant and cheerful. The exceptional value is just the cherry on top.

“We continue to diversify and grow the collection every year, keeping our focus on timeless style and innovative design,” Hansen says. “An exciting arrival on the horizon is our new line of sustainable office furnishings from Italy, made from 100% recycled wood and 100% FSC certified.” With sustainable furnishings emerging as a significant design movement, you can count on the Essentials Collection to keep you modern. The future looks bright.
